There’s More…
Recent research from the University of Kent¹, City University London² and Cambridge University³ have found that childcare policies and workplace nurseries:

  • Would be positively embraced by 70 per cent of employees.

  • Were cost-effective to over 90 per cent of companies currently using workplace nurseries and childcare policies.

  • Increase performance in financial, labour production and sales areas.

  • Reduce staff turnover.

With childcare provisions in place for employees there is also a reduction in staff working part-time, from home, flexible hours. There would also be a reduction in child care associated problems.

The benefits were not just found in large companies with over 500 employees, but across all businesses, regardless of size.

Tax and National Insurance Contribution Exemptions

From April 2005 new legislation has come into force. Employers assisting employees with childcare will receive Tax and National Insurance exemptions. There are three kinds of childcare support that can save companies and employees money:

1) Childcare vouchers, up to £50 per week (£217 a month):

Redeemable at nurseries accepting childcare vouchers. Companies can purchase childcare vouchers from childcare voucher companies and give them to employees who require childcare. These vouchers can be used on top of salaries or as part of a salary sacrifice scheme.

2) Payment direct to childcare providers of up to £50 per week (£217 per month):

Here the employer pays the employees childcare provider direct, either on top of the current salary or as part of a salary sacrifice scheme.

3) Set up a workplace nursery:

Employers can integrate their own workplace nursery. If they haven’t the resources to create their own nursery they can contact a local nursery provider and set up a contract.

Here there is no limit to how much childcare employers can subsidise. Any subsidy can be on top of employee’s salary or as part of a salary sacrifice scheme.

With all the new government solutions to childcare comes national insurance and Tax exemptions for employers and employees.

Employers can make up to 12.8 per cent in National Insurance Savings or around £300 a year.

Options
Providing your employees with childcare policies is a decision in itself to make. After you have decided to support your employees there different ways you can implement it:

  1. Setting up a workplace nursery with St. George’s Nursery.
  2. St George’s Nursery has the expertise and facilities to become a workplace nursery for employers.

Developing a contractual agreement with St. George’s will guarantee that employees who want a childcare place, whether that be part-time full-time, holiday or after school care will get a place at St. George’s Nursery.

St. George’s Nursery can provide literature and posters and will allow companies to promote the nursery as their on-site workplace nursery.

Companies do no have to pay any childcare fees unless there are employees who wish to take up spaces with St. George’s Nursery. Companies can also stipulate how much they want to subsidise or whether they want the subsidy to be part of a salary sacrifice scheme.

  3. Direct Payments or Childcare Vouchers can be set up between your company and St. George’s Nursery.
  4. Here there is no obligation to work with St. George’s. However, if you do chose to work with St. George’s Nursery we can provide you with relevant information, links and can advertise that your company has childcare provisions for employees, to both current employees and potential employees.

There are far reaching benefits of working with St. George’s. Associating your company with that of a quality local provider of childcare will further your company image.
